The sea affects people and people affect the sea. When we protect the sea, we also protect ourselves — from ourselves.
More than 70% of the Earth's surface is sea. The world's seas contain well over 90 percent of our planet's water resources, and they serve as an irreplaceable habitat and food source for billions of living creatures.
The seas also play an important role in the fight against climate change: they produce more than 50% of the world's oxygen. Every living thing on our planet depends, one way or another, on the well-being of the seas.
The world's seas are not doing well and their health is deteriorating even more. Climate change warms up the sea waters, which has a wide impact on various ecosystems and may even end up devastating entire marine areas.
To put it bluntly: the seas have become landfills. They already contain more than 150 million tons of plastic waste. According to an estimate by the World Wide Fund for Nature, the amount of plastic waste in the seas may even quadruple by 2050 if littering continues. Coral reefs, mangrove forests, turtles, seals, whales, sea lions, birds and all kinds of small creatures on the seabed are at risk.
The diversity of the world's seas is also shrinking at an unprecedented rate. Reasons for the negative development are e.g. climate change, overuse of natural resources and pollution of the seas.
The world's seas need your help.
Although the situation is serious, the game is not yet lost. Each of us can have a positive impact on the state of the world's seas. Here are some concrete tips that a single person can use to promote the health of the seas. So let's be the change we want to see in the world!
The first step towards improving the state of the seas is to raise awareness. Get information about the state of the world's seas, the sensitivity of ecosystems and how your choices affect the environment. Education and awareness provide motivation for responsible choices and encourage a sustainable lifestyle.
Our everyday choices also affect the state of the marine environment. Think long and hard before buying something new, use up things you own until the end of their lifecycle and recycle unusable things in the right way. Choose environmentally friendly products, avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and if you eat fish, fish yourself or choose sustainably fished products.
You are probably already aware that all Ole Hyvä products are kind to both the skin and the environment.
Our Meri products, which use algae that burden the seas, are very special from the point of view of protecting the seas. When algae is removed from the sea and, in accordance with the principles of the circular economy, is further utilized in our products in line with sustainable development, the ecosystems of the seas are helped. The algae-based alginate in marine products is supplied to us by a Finnish company called Origin by Ocean, which extracts biodegradable ingredients from algae that burden the sea. When nutrients can be removed from the sea, the condition of the water bodies improves and the ecosystems of the seas also do better.
A very concrete way to reduce littering in the seas is to clean up rubbish from beaches. So take part in voluntary cleaning events or organize them yourself! For example, the Keep the Archipelago Tidy association organizes beach clean-ups in different parts of Finland.
Many environmental organizations work diligently to help the world's seas. Through organizations, you can easily participate in volunteer work, sign petitions and support concrete projects. Among others, the John Nurminen Foundation and BSAG are specialized in saving the Baltic Sea. WWF, The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and Greenpeace also work towards saving the world's seas.
The most ecological trip is the one that is not taken at all. However, if you do travel, lighten your carbon footprint, and prefer local travel and environmentally friendly travel options, such as train trips and carpooling. In addition, supporting local ecotourism projects promotes sustainable tourism.
The reduction of plastic waste in everyday life also lowers the amount of plastic waste and microplastics that end up in the seas. So, choose refillable packaging and remember to recycle plastic packaging. You can buy Ole Hyvä products in both refill packs and whole canisters, and you can pump them into your own bottle in many eco and health stores.
The products of the Ole Hyvä series do not contain microplastics or other raw materials from the petrochemical industry - unlike, unfortunately, many products found on the shelves of "standard shops".
By working together, we can help the world's seas and ensure that future generations, like the rest of life, can enjoy healthy and diverse marine environments. Even a small act matters - a drop in the sea is not insignificant.
The Ole Hyvä Meri series uses alginate produced from seaweed by the Finnish algae processing company, Origin by Ocean. The gentle and completely sulfate-free cleaning products in the product family are designed with respect for marine ecosystems, and their use reduces the nutrient load of the seas in everyday life. The CAERULO™ alginate used in Mari products, isolated from algae, creates a film that protects the skin and maintains the skin's moisture balance - whilst, at the same time, also helping the world's seas.
The Meri series includes shampoo-shower gel, hair conditioner and hand wash. Read more about the products here and make a responsible choice for the world's seas!
